Where Japanese restraint meets Scandinavian warmth. Sintered stone and warm oak — two materials that have always belonged together, finally given a name.

Japandi is the meeting point of two design philosophies that, despite their different origins, share the same underlying instinct: that a well-made room contains only what is necessary, and everything that is necessary is beautiful.
From Japan comes wabi-sabi — the acceptance of imperfection, the appreciation of natural materials in their honest state, the preference for quiet over noise. From Scandinavia comes hygge — warmth, craftsmanship, the considered comfort of a space that feels genuinely lived in. Together, they produce interiors that are neither cold nor cluttered: minimal without being stark, warm without being busy.
In UK bathrooms, Japandi is finding its moment. After years of maximalist marble and ornate Victorian fittings, the shift toward restraint feels overdue. The best Japandi bathrooms are rooms where nothing competes for attention — clean horizontal lines, a single tone of stone, one warm timber running the full width of the room.
Every Lave basin begins with sintered stone — a material formed under extreme heat and pressure from natural minerals, producing a surface that is hard, non-porous, and quietly beautiful. It has the weight of concrete and the refined quality of natural stone, without the maintenance of either.
Paired with warm oak, the combination is unmistakably Japandi. The pale mineral grey of the stone and the honey grain of the oak occupy opposite ends of the same tonal palette: cool and warm, hard and soft, permanent and living. Neither material is trying to be anything it isn't. That honesty is precisely the point.
This is not a trend applied to a product — it is the product expressing what it already was. Sintered stone and warm oak, clean integrated lines, no seams, no overflow, no excess. Lave's basins have always been Japandi. We're simply naming it now.
These are the choices that produce the most resolved Japandi result. Every element is configurable through our online designer — the recommendations below are a starting point, not a prescription.
Japandi is fundamentally about fit — a room where nothing is extraneous and everything belongs. Off-the-shelf pieces can suggest the aesthetic, but they rarely achieve it. An alcove that is 1340mm wide calls for a vanity that is 1340mm wide. A basin that stops 50mm short of the wall reads as almost, not considered.
Every Lave piece is made to your exact dimensions, from 700 to 2400mm wide. Bowl position, depth, edge profile, tap hole location — all specified to suit your room, not adjusted to fit a standard size. Use the online designer to configure your piece, and we'll send a complimentary 3D concept and full quote within 48 hours.
