What Is Sintered Stone?
Sintered stone is produced by taking natural raw minerals — quartz, feldspar, silica, and natural pigments — then compressing them under extreme pressure (around 400 bar) and heating to over 1200°C. This process mimics the natural formation of stone, but in controlled factory conditions that produce a perfectly consistent, pore-free surface.
The result is a material with a Mohs hardness of around 7 — harder than granite (6–7), harder than marble (3–4), and significantly harder than solid surface (2–3) or stone resin (3–4). It's used in the most demanding architectural applications: high-end kitchen worktops, façades, flooring. Lave uses it for basins.
How It Compares to Other Basin Materials
Sintered Stone vs. Marble
Marble is beautiful but high-maintenance. It's porous, which means acids (toothpaste, soap, citric acid) etch the surface over time. It absorbs liquids, develops stains, and requires regular sealing to stay looking clean.
Sintered stone is non-porous by nature. Nothing penetrates the surface. No etching, no staining, no sealing — ever. It gives you the premium, mineral aesthetic of stone without any of the maintenance burden.
Sintered Stone vs. Solid Surface (e.g. Corian)
Solid surface materials are acrylic-based composites. They're warm to the touch, seamless, and repairable — but relatively soft (Mohs 2–3). They scratch from everyday objects, discolour with heat, and can yellow under UV over time.
Sintered stone is dramatically harder. It won't scratch from taps, keys, or cleaning tools. It's completely heat-proof — you could place a hot curling iron directly on it. And it's UV-stable, so it looks the same after ten years as it did on day one.
Sintered Stone vs. Stone Resin
Stone resin blends crushed stone with resin binders. It's durable and popular in freestanding baths, but the resin component makes it softer and more vulnerable to staining than pure mineral materials. Over time, the surface can dull.
Sintered stone contains no resin — it's entirely mineral. The surface hardness and finish are permanent, not dependent on a binder that can degrade.
Sintered Stone vs. Ceramic / Vitreous China
Ceramic basins are the most common mass-market choice. They're easy to produce and inexpensive, but glazed ceramic chips at edges and impact points, and the glaze can craze over time exposing the porous substrate beneath.
Sintered stone is dense all the way through — not a glaze over a softer body. There's no glaze to chip or craze, and the colour and texture run through the full depth of the material.
Why It Matters in a Bathroom
Bathrooms are one of the most demanding environments in a home. Surfaces face daily exposure to water, soap, cleaning products, steam, and temperature changes. The basin in particular needs to handle all of this while staying hygienic and looking good.
Sintered stone's non-porous surface means bacteria and mould have nowhere to take hold. It wipes clean completely with a damp cloth — no specialist products, no scrubbing, no periodic re-sealing. For a surface that's used multiple times every day, that's a meaningful advantage.
